The Friday Dish: Deals for December, Christmas cocktails, and the best cream-based soup ever
Better late than never when it comes to deals in December!
Q4 has $10 pasta deals every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Mmmmm paaasta.
SOCIETY has a sweet deal for all those overworked parents out there (of which I am one and probably also Number One at that): Kids eat free on Sundays! What if you can’t make it in with the tots on Sunday? No problem. All Kids’ Menu items are only $5 the rest of the week.
Bridges restaurant presents Wine Wednesdays: 50% of all bottles of wine on their wine list (with meals) on Wednesday evenings.
Around Vancouver, lots of events are going on to get you in the holiday mood, provided the “holiday mood” means the heavy consumption of alcohol. I’m pretty sure that it does.
Marquis Wine Cellar will offer free wine tastings every Friday from now through December 17th. Every Friday, around 2:00 pm, they open two bottles (ranging in price from $70 to $190 a bottle) from Burgundy. Mmmmm wine! And you might just find the perfect gift for that special alcoholic in your life.
I know this is a joke, but if you want to drive to Abbotsford (ha ha), the West Coast Christmas Show and Marketplace is happening this weekend. No wineries or breweries though. I got excited when I read Wineland, but turns out it was Wineland Dressing. Similarly, don’t get too excited about Okanagan Vinegar Brewery—it’s just vinegar. Really. One bright note: The Dairy Farmers of Canada will be sharing the secrets of cheese. Hmm, I do love cheese.
For my more reasonable readers, something closer to home is happening. The first annual Vancouver Christmas Market will be open downtown every day through Christmas Eve. It is an authentic outdoor German Christmas market village featuring unique holiday shopping, seasonal music and entertainment, and delicious traditional food and drink. Try Feuerzangenbowle, a traditional German Christmas tradition: an alcoholic drink for which a sugar cube is flambéed with rum, dripping into mulled wine. Or some German beer. Whatever your poison, Christmas shopping will never be so good again!
Once you are good and boozy, don’t try to soak up some of that alcohol at Khai Thai To Go or The Wired Monk. While both restaurants have reopened, they were recently closed due to Pest Infestations.
Because I am a Grinch and a cheapskate, I wanted to share a Friday Dish that wouldn’t break the bank during this evil Commercialstmas season. That is Bonchaz Bakery‘s “Mr. Bacon and Mrs. Mushroom Soup,” which is one of the best cream-based soups I’ve had. Trying to think of a better one…nope, can’t do it. It’s nom nom nom nom.

[...] I’d gone to Bonchaz way back in the day and I’d reviewed it for another website. It was good. Just good. Bonchaz, the little rounds of soft bread with something sweet sprinkled on top or tucked away inside, were good. Not blow-your-mind, thinking-about-it-at-midnight-when-you’re-staring-at-an-empty-fridge sort of way. Just good. (With the exception of the soup, mind you. That was so good that I mentioned it in a previous Vancouver Bites post here.) [...]

Not sure if you read about the accident at the Christmas Market. It seems they won’t re-open until next week… >_<
Driving to Abbotsford? We did that once for pizza!
